June 7, 2026 Topic: Friendship After Prison — Learning to Build and Maintain Relationships in the Free World
One of the challenges many returning citizens face is learning how friendships work outside of prison.
In prison, friendship often develops through proximity and routine.
You see the same people every day:
• You walk to chow together
• You spend time in the day room together
• You go to yard together
• You live life side by side
The structure of prison creates opportunities for connection.
In the free world, friendships work differently.
People have:
• Jobs
• Families
• School
• Responsibilities
• Different schedules and priorities
You may go weeks or even months without seeing someone you consider a close friend.
For many returning citizens, this can create feelings of:
• Isolation
• Rejection
• Confusion
• Loneliness
Adding to the challenge is technology.
Many returning citizens came home to a world where texting, social media, group chats, and digital communication became the primary way people maintain relationships.
For someone who spent years incarcerated, these forms of communication can feel unfamiliar, uncomfortable, or impersonal.
Today we’ll discuss how to build and maintain meaningful friendships in a world that operates very differently than the prison environment.

How this connects to PICS:
• PTSD — assuming distance means rejection or abandonment
• Institutionalization — expecting relationships to function through routine and proximity
• Antisocial traits — withdrawing when connection feels difficult
• Social sensory deprivation syndrome — struggling to interpret modern social interactions and communication
• Substance use disorder — using substances to cope with loneliness, isolation, or disappointment

Practical Coping Skills We May Discuss
• Learning to maintain friendships through texting and phone calls
• Scheduling intentional contact instead of waiting for chance encounters
• Understanding that distance does not automatically mean disconnection
• Being willing to initiate contact
• Learning new communication tools and technology
• Building quality friendships instead of relying solely on proximity
