If you have ever been locked up in a city, county, state, or federal jail. Or if you have been in and out of Recovery Substance Abuse centers. Or if you were raised in a State Foster care system. Or if you have lived or are living in an Adult Care Facility, you have experienced one of the “syndromes.” The fact that you were living, even for one day, in any of these places exposed you to institutional lifestyles. The trauma related to these experiences was, in fact, PTSD. Have the experiences led to stealing, lying, conning, substance use, or other negative Antisocial behaviors? Do you have sensory issues, for example, noises trigger panic, or bright lights, or would you rather be alone in a closed space?

Institutionalized Personality Traits: This passivity is derived from an
individual’s ongoing state of learned helplessness encountered while
incarcerated.
• Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD): This disorder is based on
trauma originating both before and during their time in prison.
• Antisocial Personality Traits (ASPT): These passive-aggressive
tendencies are a coping mechanism against the abuse derived within
the prison system.
• Social-Sensory Deprivation Syndrome: This is caused by
prolonged periods of solitary confinement.
• Substance Abuse Disorders: Inmates, both current and former,
often turn to drugs to self-medicate to temper and escape the
symptoms and disorders caused by PICS.
